Here they come again, churning away. This time slo-mo metallers Sunn O))) have recorded with grumpy recording engineer Steve Albini who, when answering the phone from the big hairy guys said "Sure, this will be fun". And fun it was as the band drafted in violin ace Hildur Guðnadóttir (Mum, Pan Sonic) to add textures and all sorts to the ever expanding brew. Also Anthony Pateras guests on pipe organ.

When the highlights book of Twitter comes out then one of the entries must be the time Stephen O Malley was despairing about Kenny G playing at the Kardashians house. It's one of the good things about the generally awful social media carousel that it's nice to know that even doom metal Gods have a tolerance point before they have to explode publicly.

Look, I'll level with you. This album is one hour and nine minutes long. I do not have one hour and nine minutes to spare in order to work out its every crevasse and sinew. For a full and frank assessment please go seek the Quietus review or similar when it appears or alternately just buy the album now and ask questions later. It starts with the biggest slab of guitar churn I've ever heard. Tip: Do not start this album at top volume as I did. Instead ease your way in and watch the sloth like guitars slowly reveal themselves as Hildur Guonadottir's vocals provide a slightly lighter hue to the slabs of darkness on opener Troubled Air.

The biggest surprise is that when asked to record the album, grumpy engineer Steve Albini intoned brightly "I have no idea what is going to happen". He must have had some idea that this dark duo would provide huge slabs of monolithic guitar scree played at a snails pace, that the doom metal overlords would spend over an hour picking out the slowest lowest chords known to man. But the devil is in the detail with Sunn O))) as listen closely you'll hear all manner of sonic details, nice slices of feedback, unusual touches like pipe organ and electric cello as the group subtly introduce other elements into the sludge.

Probably really good but I'm out of my allotted time, I'll leave them to go on with their painstaking journey whilst I kick back with the smooth sax sounds of...well...how about some Kenny G?
