Oh my word look how far north he is now. You'd have to get a plane up there. This is the first album from Edwyn Collins since he relocated to Helmsdale in the highlands of Scotland. It contains a few of his usual Northern Soul stompers as well as more reflective material which mirrors the place Edwyn now finds himself which is 'Content with life' he concludes. Bless him.

Only an arsehole would have anything derogatory to say about Edwyn Collins. The way he battled back from a life threatening stroke is impressive enough without adding in that he has carried on making music since recovery. It does make it harder though to critically assess it as it's just incredible he's done it but the fact that his latest record Badbea opens with three northern soul stompers gives the album an even more life affirming feel. The pick of the three is In the Morning which fairly blasts along with a Motown groove and an infectious chorus. If people like Edwyn Collins still had hits then this could bother the charts in the same way as his A Girl Like You mega smash.
There's similarly upbeat moments like punk rock lead track Outside which blasts along on a sea of Ramones guitars and sees Collins voice shrouded in distortion. It's an incredibly energetic album and it's odd downbeat track like It All Makes Sense To Me and the lovely Beauty seem more like anomalies amongst the noise and chaos. Collins let's it all hang out with nods to 70s glam, kraut rock and dirty, filthy rock and roll on an album on which he seems to be having tremendous fun. Collins neurological rehabilitation has obviously affected the dexterity of his lyrics but at times it works in his favour - it may lack a bit of the old sophisticated magic here he's made a simple catchy fuzzy rock and roll album which again is a small triumph.
