Scrappy and belligerent garage-punk group from Australia, treading that sloppy-tight balance with a real sense of vigour and gnarled energy. Yelped vocals, scathing guitar lines, this isn’t reinventing the wheel, but it knows what it is and does it well. A. Swayze & The Ghosts are a promising young band and this 12” single titled ‘Suddenly’ comes out via Rough Trade.

Suddenly by A. Swayze & The Ghosts

Rough Trade have an exciting new Australian hope on their roster with the confusingly named A. Swayze and the Ghosts.  It would be easier for everyone if they were just called Swayze and the Ghosts but anyway the A. is there and I'm just going to have to deal with it.

This is a two track taster of what is to come from them and it's a melodic attack of high octane punk rock with the Strokes like guitars and the sort of rough hewn vocals that could only come from very gruff Australian men. Lead track Suddenly with blow your cobwebs away at very least with the sort of tuneful racket that could have come from Australian forbearers such as the Saints.

Reciprocation is more of a spoken word thing over simple fuzzy guitar that sounds something like the Velvet Underground merging into a Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever. It has an insistence that builds over the course of ten whole minutes and is the sort of thing that is going to sounds great live. Get them on as support slot for the upcoming Rolling Blackouts tour and watch the sparks fly.
