Pregoblin are an indie band led by Alex Sebly (The Saudis) and Jessica Winter. Combustion is their latest single. Jessica Winter has worked with members of The Fat White Family in the past and this is probably the greatest clue to how Pregoblin sound. She also has a voice that’s reminiscent of Beth Ditto. The band also have connections with Gorrilaz and Dinosaur Pile-Up. 7" on Fnord Communications.

9/10 Will Staff review, 08 March 2019

In 2018, Pregoblin released their first single, ‘Combustion’, online. Now, a year after it was released, London label Fnord Communications have released this marvellous piece of pop as a physical single. The 7” is a perfect medium for the record, as it’s everything a single should be: short, catchy, and it makes you want to listen to it fifty more times (I did). At two minutes forty-four, it never outstays its welcome. This succinctness is the only thing separating it from classic disco which tends to clock in at a little longer. It’s heartening to hear something that’s so unashamedly pop coming out of a scene that, for all it’s good qualities, has a tendency to err on the side of the seedy and the tatterdemalion.

From associations with the Fat White Family, the South London scene, and the fact that ‘Pregoblin’ is a reference to the epilepsy drug Pregabalin that some people use to come off heroin, you’d would expect something altogether very different to what 'Combustion' offers. It’s a short-but-sweet slice of delicious disco that is every bit as good as anything The Bee Gees ever did (there I said it). The beauty of disco that it settles into a groove and stays there, and Combustion does this perfectly with a superb, chunky, slightly off-kilter piano refrain that’ll stick in your head for days. This piano adds a brilliantly Balearic feel to the song. Pregoblin, watch out because Alfredo is coming for your beats. The lyrics are as fantastic as the music, ‘I wear a wrist on each wrist so I cannot be missed’; I mean, come on.

Pregoblin is the alias of long-time Fat Whites-associate Alex Sebley (who co-wrote their 2015 hit ‘Touch the Leather’) and Jessica Winter. After signing a publishing deal with Domino Records, the London group are set to make a name for themselves in a world which is seriously lacking some proper disco. Sebley has said that Pregoblin want ‘to be as big as we can be’ and 'Combustion' has set them well on the road to achieving this. After announcing last year that their album would be released in late 2018, it’s unsure where they’re going right now but it’s certain that ‘Combustion’ is a certified banger.
