Visage Pâle is the recording moniker of Lars Martin-Isler. Holistic Love is his debut LP. Isler is part-Swiss, part-Swedish and is based in Lausanne in a French speaking region of Switzerland. The songs are sung in English and French. They are made using a whole host of analogue electronic machines, creating emotionally charged, fragile and ethereal soundscapes.

Something slightly different here from Castles In Space. Holistic Love is an album of sweet, soulful synth pop from Abidjan-born musician Lars-Martin Isler. The opener Empire is a quite lovely thing. Initially it sounds something like a lost Kraftwerk fragment but things change when the vocals appear. The falsetto voice in the chorus adds a touch of class and a great big chunk of musicality to proceedings. It's like one of those gorgeous early 80s yearning synth ballads. Ether starts with a strange farty sound which gives way to gorgeous arpeggiated synth notes and Isler's mournful voice drifting on top. I'm thinking this may be too song-y for fans of your Ghost Box and Pye Corner Audio type retro synth workouts but for those of us who like a bit of human emotion in our music it's a godsend - and it packs the kind of emotional punch that the more 'out there' releases lack.
In the wrong hands these could be gloopy euro-ballads but Isler matches his songcraft with beautiful analogue synth work that keeps things from being too 'Eurovision'. Instead, his sound lies somewhere between Kraftwerk, Boards of Canada, Yazoo, A-ha and Double and with songs of the quality of Empire this is a quite wonderful place to reside.
