Legendary Californian garage rockers The Chocolate Watchband formed in 1965. They released three albums, split up and reformed then split up again. That was 1970. They reformed in 1999 releasing one studio album and a live album. In 2013 they got back together to record a new album. Six whole years later we have that album - This Is My Voice. It seems they needed to come back to tell Trump what they think of him. LP and CD on Dirty Water.

I was initially confused when I saw the name Chocolate Watchband in the review box. I thought to myself, ‘surely not the same Californian psychedelic originators who had a song on ‘Nuggets’’ (surely a mark of authenticity for any 60s psych band worth their salt), and yet, sure enough it was. It’s always nice to hear a beloved band are still keepin’ on keepin’ on (Rolling Stone you are most certainly ‘This Is My Voice’ wasn’t the backwards-looking record I was expecting it to be. The classic garage-y, psych-y songs are tempered by songs that are just a little bit more interesting, such as ‘Judgement Day’, an apocalyptic ditty carried along by sitars and lyrics that rage against America’s current situation. I also really like titular track ‘This Is Not My Track’, another track that has the kind of apocalyptic feel you get with songs released at the fag-end of the 60s.
Now this record is never going to get any marks for originality, but that’s not really the thrust of this album. They’ve done an admirable job of making something that sounds fresh, something that doesn’t stick to any sort of formula and it’s good to hear a ‘heritage’ act responding to political events. ‘This Is My Voice’ is a snotty, angry LP made by one of psychedelic rock’s most eminent proponents.
P.S Look out for the cover of some of the 60s finest sons - The Music Machine.
