How is it that artists on Stone Throw sound like Adrian Gurvitz these days? This is the 6th album from Benny Sings (where has he been all my life?) and he seriously taps into that brand of laid back 70s singer songwriter (see also Andrew Gold and Rupert Holmes). It's all rinky dink arrangements, seemingly made on Casio keyboard, a tiny tiny voice that sounds like it's coming out of the smallest mouth in the world and the sort of lush and deep arrangements we got pretty used to during the days of yacht rock.
The sweet soulful songwriting just steers Benny to the portside of being an irrelevant joke. The Michael McDonald synth work in Not Enough is thick, gloopy and full of nice chord changes, the album has those LA vibes that you expect from Stone Throw but this one has the dial on the FM stations, sitting nicely between Hall & Oates and Christopher Cross.
