Housewives have made the classic move for their second album, moving from a guitar-dominated sound to a more electronic presentation. With this change has come an increased interest in What Technology Means These Days, which makes for some strong lyrical-sonic juxtapositions. Twilight Splendour is out on Blank Editions.

8/10 Clinton Staff review, 19 March 2019

Hello. Can anyone make an interesting record please? Well I *might* have come to the right place with this second album by London 5 piece Housewives. Usually when I read that a band has put down their guitars to pick up electronics I make a run for it to the latest hill as more often than not what they are talking about is copying Kate Bush's 1985 synth sound. Instead Housewives create a kind of fractured version of experimental rock with staccato rhythms, bizarre ear challenging samples and an out there take on sonics. What it means is that you never quite know what you are going to hear next from Speak To Me's This Heat style repeato rock to 'Dormi' which begins with a full minute of sub bass ticks before literally anything comes intro the mix and even then it's just a bell.

It's hard work at times but on tracks like Smitten Kittens they recall Disco Inferno's DI Go Pop with wild sampling, off beat drumming and eventually a sort of saxophone squeak drone. It's nothing I fully understand but it's very very different from anything else that is around right now. A few tunes wouldn't go amiss but if you want something modern day which at least attempts to get near to the experimental cacophony of PIL's Metal Box, This Heat Deceit Or Moonshake's Eva Luna then do give this a go.
