I guess an Oozing Wound would be a cause of High Anxiety. This Oozing Wound are a bunch of stoners from Chicago, whose music sounds as though they are fuelled by something more stimulating. Their sound meets halfway between sludgy rock and thrash metal and it has to be said, it’s quite exciting. LP and CD on Thrill Jockey.

You already know what this is don’t you. I can’t think of any particular time that a sludge-y band has put actual sludge on their album artwork but I bet Oozing Wound aren’t the first and they definitely won’t be the last. Having been a Thrill Jockey staple for a while now, they return to the label with High Anxiety, an album much funner than its title implies.

They’ve been at this a while, have Oozing Wound. The sort of band that will write a song called ‘Surrounded By Fucking Idiots’ which makes me want to be in a mosh pit with said fucking idiots. This, of course is down to the sort of music they make. It’s like Melvins with a nitrous injection, it’s like Slayer wading in a bog. The seven tracks here hit hard, hit fast and hit grimey, powered by the sort of drumming that gives you heart palpitations.

Vocalist Zack Weil has the perfect phlegm-ridden voice meaning that, as gross as the guitars get, he can always match them. And the guitars! Oozing Wound are largely happy to chug along, but there are bunch of top drawer riffs here that will stick in your mind for weeks. ‘Tween Shitbag’ even manages to free itself from the muddy dirge to offer us a bit of showboaty upper octave shredding that is every bit as relieving as clearing out a stuffy nose with a big blow.

High Anxiety is the aural equivalent of something so disgusting you can't take your eyes off it.
