Flamingods aren't just any old psych rock band. For this their second full length album they have soaked themselves in the vibes of the disco funk and psychedelic sounds which came out of the Middle East and South Asia in the 1970s. This has resulted in an uplifting and sun-drenched brand of exotic psychedelia aimed at getting people dancing.

Levitation by Flamingods

8/10 Will Staff review, 03 May 2019

Ahhhhh modern 'psych' that actually sounds good. I'm writing this having only heard ten seconds of the opener to Flamingods fourth album and I already know it's going to be good. It's brash, hard-hitting, varied, everything 'rock' music should be. I'm not really sure what separates artists like Flamingods, King Gizz, and Kurt Vile from others of their ilk that just can't make music as interesting, even though they seem to be using the same synth sounds and similar production techniques, etc etc. I suspect some kind of black magic somewhere. Some bands have just been saddled with a pretty rough deal, cosmically speaking.

'Levitation' (what is it about the concept of levitation that is so beloved by psych acts? There's Levitation festival, there's 'Levitation' by Hawkwind, there's the band 'Levitation Room'... I digress... back to the review...) is full of Eastern-inspired melodies and rhythms, or at least, what us Westerners perceive to be Eastern-sounding. That said, founding member Kamal Rasool is actually from Bahrain so he does know his onions with this kind of thing. There's so much going on in this record. There are vocal mantras, complex guitar lines, pounding drums, weird wobbly synths, all sorts. 'Levitation' is a confident and full-realised LP from a band that's levitating all the way to greatness (that's the worst closing line I've ever written but I can't really think of anything better, sorry).
