Finally, this ultra-mysterious project from Heinrich Mueller aka Gerald Donald (Dopplereffekt, Drexciya, Arpanet, XOR Gate, Japanese Telecom, Der Zyklus etc.) is available for all to hear. The project first emerged over ten years ago on MySpace along with some super creepy videos on YouTube and a handful of live performances. In the decade that has elapsed, fans of Gerald Donald's work have been itching get their mitts on Black Replica music. I most certainly have. It feels like I’ve built this one up in my head into something so spectacular that I’m inevitably gonna be disappointed. I’m my own worst enemy.
Anyways, now, thanks to Metaphysik we can finally sleep at night with this full LP - in some ways, a mystical sound comparable to Donald's work with Beta Evers, Penélope Martín and Susana Correia as Zwischenwelt or the Tarkovsky influenced Zerkalo. I’m not sure who is responsible for the vocals in Black Replica but it certainly has a similar vibe to those projects and a possibly even more perplexing, darker and mysterious occult like mood. Donald’s trademark sound is stamped all over the album - if you’re a fan of his output you can detect he’s behind it immediately, but there’s plenty of moments which are quite unexpected. The ethereal, almost operatic ‘Nether Realm’ for example, or ‘Mathematische Augen' which sounds like some freaky lost 80’s German goth type track. The overall feel is kinda gothic I suppose. If you’re already familiar with the tracks “Spider Theory’ and 'Mathematische Augen/ Mathematical Eyes' from the YouTube videos then you’ll have a good idea of what to expect, as they’re both good indicators of the overall sound and aesthetic that runs through the album - a record with some curiously chilling moments. I'm not disappointed cuz I dig the weirder stuff that Donald does, but your average Drexciya fan could well find this one hard work.
