Instrumental duo, Alone In The Woods, are inspired by both orchestral and hip-hop sounds. On their self-titled debut, they express their inspirations with the use of warm synth tones and a blend of downtempo beats and ambient production. You should see the colour of the vinyl on this one. What is described as 'forest burst' looks more like and explosion in the lime and cream bon bon factory. The music is a strange marriage of arpeggios and strings. It's a very synthetic sounding thing with synths and drum machines playing out a kind of prog tronica. My favourite track 'Torn in the Tundra' is a bigger production with a kind of early 80s synth/goth sound. There's something of Dead Can Dance here but also Gary Numan all shot through with the busy soundtrack vibe of your John Carpenter or Hans Zimmer.
To be honest I'm baffled. They are soundtracking something but I'm not sure what it is. The fact that they've seemingly done it in 1984 and are unafraid of the panpipe setting is something that will either fascinate you or make you run for the nearest hill.
