La la la, plink plonk plink, some new Nils Frahm here to make you think. The Pianist For All Millennials drops the second of his Encore EPs via Erased Tapes. This one kind of sounds like a more highfalutin take on Vangelis’s score for Blade Runner. Encores 2 is definitely music, and when all things are considered that’s probably a good thing.

Encores 2 follows on from Encores 1 and is either Nils nicely milking it post 'All Melody' with a load of spare tracks / outtakes or some of the most lovely work he's produced for a good while that needs saving from the cutting room floor. I'm going for the latter. '1' was good, but I think '2' is just slightly better. Opener 'Sweet Little Lie' is just lush, a mournful and haunting piano piece that is perfect for both staring out of the window on a rainy day whilst slowly sobbing to yourself, or lying in a field and watching the clouds pass on a sunny day whilst dreaming of the warm embrace of a loved one. Quality stuff. Track two is actually called 'A Walking Embrace' and is gorgeous too, with added strings to carry the track, and side one ends with 'Talisman', a gorgeous drone that is not dissimilar to label mates A Winged Victory For The Sullen.
As with '1', side two gives us a different vibe, and the 12 minute 'Spells' is much more like the stuff included on 'All Melody'. Electronic and quite upbeat. And nice juxtaposition to side one, this EP gives you a bit of everything that Nils has mastered over the years. Top stuff.
