I really admire Kouhei Matsunaga’s dedication to carving out multiple different artistic identities for himself, and I admire even more so his obtuse decision here to mash those identities back together again. The Self Split EP credits Kouhei alongside Speedy K and NHK yx koyxen, both of whom are also himself: only Masayuki Imanishi is an actual different person. The four tracks are suitably wild and enticing, whoever made them. Diagonal 12”

Fresh from records for DFA, Kohei Matsunaga returns to Diagonal, somewhat confusingly splitting a record with two tracks by himself under his own name alongside Masayuki Imanishi (member of Japanese noise fiends Eartaker alongside Goth-Trad) and under his NHK yx Koyxen handle. The two whip up a frenzy of bleeps, zaps, slithery glitchy textures and noise on the malfunctioning machine sounds of ‘Texture Foggy #01’. NHK yx Koyxen then drags us onto the ‘floor for some of his looping techno - in a similar style to his pair of albums on PAN, but this feels heavier, grittier and murkier. One for the solo man mosh pit with face pressed firmly into the speaker.
On the flipside, the duo go back at it with the practically suffocating ‘Texture Foggy #02’ which is something like trying to swim out of some digital black gloop, only to eventually crawl out and slip back down into an abyss. Then ‘Early Mellow Darkness’ sandblasts some familiar NHK yx Koyxen sounds, roughing them up and smoothing them out over skittering breaks, making for a trippy, warping, squelching, brain-busting leg tangler.
