It's been something like six years since we last got an album from KTL -- Stephen O’Malley of Sunn O)))) and Editions Mego bossman Peter Rehberg (Pita). Their sound has evolved from their early drone metal meets computer music work into something that sounds like it could have been inspired by the early electronic music Rehberg has been reissuing via Recollections GRM (for which O’Malley has been responsible for the gorgeous art/graphic design). Or something that could have come out of a residency at EMS Stockholm with an arsenal of synthesisers at their disposal. Their tones and drones feel both psychedelic and futuristic - evoking a synesthesia-like effect not dissimilar to the lights/colours depicted on the records front cover. 'The Pyre: Versions Distilled To Stereo' is, in fact, a score composed and recorded by the duo for Gisèle Vienne's dance piece ‘The Pyre’. Taken out of that context and into home listening, it's a very heady and immersive work. Trying to pull it apart and wonder where synthesizer ends and computer begins is tricky, and kinda pointless. You just need to submerge and experience the pretty colours that emerge behind the eyelids.
