Olan Mill has had a baby (congrats, Olan!). As such, he’s been both quite busy and quite tired. Sounds Of A New Father was recorded in the first few months of his newborn’s life - specifically in the fever-dream moments when he’d just managed to get his baby off to sleep. These droning ambiences, ‘thumb[ed] out’ by Mill, have the same quality of transcendent beauty that pervades some of Brian Eno’s best work.

- Sounds of a New Father by Olan Mill
Apparently having a new child is dead important. Being childless at near 50 I'll never quite understand but people tell me that it's way better than when say My Bloody Valentine release a new album. I'll take their word for it but chatting to a few people who have done it, it means you get very tired. I can't imagine being any more tired than I already am but apparently it's possible.
Alex Smalley of Olan Mill has recently become a father (congrats) and has used the time after being shat on and vomited on by the little blighter to create washes of ambience that reflect his state of mind at certain points in the child's development. Rather than being Soothing Songs for Baby this is Soothing Songs For Parents. The ambient haze he has created out of just his guitar (he'll have sold the rest of the gear to save up to put it through college) is absolutely gorgeous. It's like looking at smoke on the horizon on a hazy day. These wisps are often barely there but they lull the listener into an incredibly becalmed mood.
A delightful series of works that are instantly transportative. And to top it off the little tot has smudged her fingers in some paint to create the cover art. Cute.
