JP Bimeni’s backstory makes the mere existence of Free Me a cause for celebration. A descendant of the royal family of Burundi, Bimeni was forced to flee his homeland after civil war broke out in 1993. He survived three attempts on his life, claimed asylum in the UK, and built a new life in London. His extraordinary life is channelled into the Stax-ish soul of this LP. Backed by his tight group The Black Belts, Bimeni belts out his sorrows in a manner that recalls greats like Otis Redding and William Bell.
