It woulda been tragic for 2018 to pass us by without a Zaïmph album. Thankfully, Drawing Room Records have managed to squeeze a record in before the year closes, and it’s as beautifully otherworldly and transportive as I could have hoped. I just wanted to draw a little attention to the fact that this existed, as so much focus this time of year is on lists which have been published before this came out, so it could quite easily slip under the radar.
"There is a crack between the two worlds, the world of the diableros and the world of living men. There is a place where these two worlds overlap. The crack is there. It opens and closes like a door in the wind." - Don Juan from The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge by Carlos Castaneda.
I’ve always felt like Marcia Bassett’s music as Zaïmph comes from and takes me to this place. Over the years I’ve come to think that there are two types of music; music where you listen and are conscious of the artist and their tools and methods of construction, and music that dissolves the fact that you’re listening to music entirely - visionary music that allows you to transcend the boundaries of yourself. Zaïmph’s sounds have always fallen firmly in the latter. Each album always feels like the apex of her work, until, that is, the next one comes out. ‘Rhizomatic Gaze’ is no different. I’ve heard this record loads and still, I’m lost for words. Every time I’ve attempted to write about it, I just zone out. So I’m not gonna go there, and besides, this feels too precious to be broken down into words like “drone” which simply won’t do it justice. This is potent psychotropic music to play in the dark - a gateway to a journey behind the eyelids.
