The Sand Pebbles are a rock band from Melbourne whose sound is at the flowery end of the the psych rock scale, and if that sounds wrong to you, then think again. Flowery psychedelia it says here which makes my ear prick up as I don't particularly go in for all the heavy drone stuff that seems to still be popular these days. Nice to hear a tune but I think the band have enough of a psych pulse that won't entirely alienate those who like a psych slog. A classic example is 'Speed and Intensity' a raucous blast through 60s inspired psych pop that manages to combine a kind of bubblegum pop form where the Monkees meets Iron Butterfly. Don't panic too much as you are going to get some jams especially on the tail end of Hanging Out and you might expect the band have an impressive array of effects at their disposal.
It's a strange blend - they even use synths to swirl some spacey effects into their lollop - other than Speed and Intensity they don't have pop songs as such but the lengthy Black Sun Ensemble perfectly exemplifies their rather tuneful way with a jam. The album veers everywhere a bit like King Gizzard on a particularly whimsical day and ends with All My Life ( I Love You) something glammy enough to appear to have come from the curly hair of Marc Bolan.
