- In Silhouette by Veronica Vasicka
As far as I can tell, this is the first solo material that DJ and Minimal Wave label owner/curator Veronica Vasicka has released. ‘In Silhouette’ was recorded some fourteen years ago and is only now seeing the light of day via Downwards. Makes you wonder how much material she’s been sat on all these years. If this is anything to go by then it’s quality stuff that really deserves to reach more ears. Although, I most definitely get the vibe from this intimate track that she’s creating purely for herself with no audience in mind, so who knows whether this will be the beginning of her opening up her recordings to the world. It’s a great track, with its heavy, minimal drum machine heartbeat and brooding analogue synth pulse. Its mechanical, metallic endoskeleton creeps and gently crawls along - the cold sterility broken by her blurry vocals.
Regis (with who she has collaborated as Kiss The Floor) tweaks up the energy levels a touch and turns the original into a right groover. Paul Kendal’s mix has him shatter the original apart and reassemble the fractured pieces into a dislocated mix with the addition of somewhat dubious guitar. Robert Hampson’s (Loop/Main) remix as Chasm seems to enhance the silvery quality, giving it a real metallic tang that’s like licking a battery, complete with spacey, dubby f/x.
