A quite unexpected but most welcome move from German producer Christoph de Babalon, hooking up with WIDT (an audiovisual duo of Antonina Nowacka and Bogumiła Piotrowska) for a sort of gothic opera, combining his darkside sound design with Antonina's arresting vocals.
‘TEYAS’ resides somewhere at the intersection of avant-garde theatre and cinema, yet Christoph de Babalon’s soundscapes are completely otherworldly. It’s an arcane sound that has me imagine I’m the sole audience member sitting inside a dank haunted theatre, watching a performance or ritual enacted by ghosts. The scene something like stepping inside one of Berlin artist Lars Teichmann’s incredible mysterious paintings, inhabited by faceless figures. The vocals have a remarkable spectral, phantom-like presence which at times recalls Keiji Haino’s more delicate vocal performances, particularly Nijiumu’s 1993 P.S.F classic ‘Era of Sad Wings’. They sing a unique language that seems to morph around the electronics, veering from angelic to demonic.
It’s an unsettling ride for sure and remains riveting throughout. Anyone seeking some Christoph de Babalon jungle should be satisfied with the records centrepiece ‘JAMAUBA’ where he unleashes a torrent of sharp breakbeats alongside WIDT sounding possessed by some malevolent force. Recommended music to play in the dark.
