If you live in Tanzania and are albino, life is damn hard. The country’s albino population have long been attacked, ostracised and persecuted. Many are abandoned by their families on Ukerewe, an inland island that can only be reached by a four-hour ferry trip. In 2016 the Tinariwen producer Ian Brennan travelled to Ukerewe to run songwriting workshops with the island’s albino community. Considering that many of those involved initially had no confidence to either sing or dance, the fact that the Tanzania Albinism Collective have made a record at all is a great triumph. That ‘White African Power (We Live In Danger)’ and ‘Stigma Everywhere’ are such potent pieces of protest music only makes them more necessary.
