Noise pop is a peculiar thing. Why bother coming up with hummable melodies if you’re just going to stomp on whatever distortion pedals you happen to have you in the room? It seems counterintuitive but it works, and it certainly works on Upper Wilds’ ‘Mars’. There’s something so potent about placing the sugary quick-fix melodies Dan Friehl, Zach Lehrhoff and Jeff Ottenbacher pump out on track after track with guitars as scuzzy and as noisy as theirs.

For the most part the noise part of the equation comes from their riffs and chords but occasionally Upper Wilds prove that it’s more than mere aesthetics for them. The album’s title track seems to be business as usual until it descends into a minute or so of PROPER NOISE (™). The drums and the bass hold fast, ensuring the song remains a song, but Friehl gets all gross and formless on his guitar. Equally, they’re also not afraid of leaning into their pop side either. Album highlight ‘Perfect Eyesight’ features harmonised guest vocals from Katie Eastburn of Young People and KATIEE, and commits that cardinal sin of noise. Of being quite beautiful.

All across the album Upper Wilds make it work. Each of its nine tracks is thrilling and heartfelt, the two sides of their coin complimenting the other in such a way that makes you appreciate them all the more. And the guitars don’t sound half bad either!
