Berlin-based Cape Town duo Medicine Boy are now members of London’s Fuzz Club - just in time for their second LP! This one’s called Lower and positively brims with tension. When not actually tipping over into angsty, swirling noise-pop, the songs often sit anxiously right on the edge, ready to go.

Bad news for me as due to our Robin's departure I can't just chuck all the Fuzz Club records and assorted psych rock in his pile and let him deal with it. Good news for me is that this latest record on the imprint isn't the usual psych rock fayre and instead an eerier proposition marrying the kind of balladry performed by the likes of PJ Harvey or Mazzy Star and adding great swathes of noise. They are fine when they stick to the spacious Lynchian textures of 'Carpets' which tinkles nicely with soft vocals and brushes of drums. I can't quite decide whether the sound they make when they burst into fuzzy psych rock works amidst the intimacy of the sound elsewhere but these are the moments that fans of Fuzz Club may well enjoy.
It's a funny blend of tight and taut murder ballads which build tension that overflows into sinister racket. At times it works quite nicely. Something a bit different anyway from the Fuzz Club stable.
