Dot Dash, who presumably have taken their name from the Wire song, feature ex-Swervedriver drummer Danny Ingram, ex-Julie Ocean bassist, Hunter Bennett and Terry Banks from Tree Fort Angst and Sarah Records band St. Christopher. Proto Retro is their 6th album and sees them performing without ex-Minor Threat and Youth Brigade member Steve Hansgen. Their hardcore edge has been replaced by a new wave jangle, but this is no bad thing as they sound great! CD on The Beautiful Music.

I realised last night whilst watching the Connells videos on Youtube that I only really like US jangle pop. Who am I kidding by pretending to like Deepchord?... it's the early work of the Windbreakers I'm hankering after. Dot Dash make the kind of honest to goodness guitar strum that fits a dBs shaped hole in my life. They feature members of several minor (key) guitar outfits such as Tree Fort Angst and Swervedriver so they know what they are doing with this stuff.
Proto Retro is a dashing energetic burst of an album that probably sounds most like the Posies with their guitar set to 'Peter Buck'. It hurtles through a bunch of songs which remind you of *that* sound with a punkish energy and playful demeanour. A lot of it reminds me of ace power pop group the Mice with Keith Moon like drumming adding a frisson of electricity to proceedings and there's chunks of Big Star's glammy songwriting and the Undertones sense of pop thrill.
It didn't knock me sideways but it's always nice to hear guitar pop played enthusiastically.
