Editions Mego (Shit & Shine, Oren Ambarchi) drop the latest LP from Heather Leigh (once known as Heather Leigh Murray). Throne is a record of singer-songwriter noir full of dark energy. Leigh commands her tracks with a smouldering intensity that is reminiscent of Wild Beasts’ Hayden Thorpe. The instrumentals also have something of that group about them, though it’s less ‘Brave Bulging Buoyant Clairvoyants’ and more the Grouper-ish murk of Present Tense’s ‘New Life’ or Two Dancers’ ‘Underbelly’.

After the excellent, but somewhat abrasive 'I Abused Animal' comes Phil's long lost sister (possibly not true) Heather Leigh's second solo release connected to Editions Mego in the shape of 'Throne'. If you enjoyed 'Animals' then you should enjoy this, but there is a definite move towards a more accessible sound present on this new release. Opener 'Prelude To Goddess' is insanely catchy and I'm still trying to decide whether the line "You make me wanna cream" is either cringe worthy or brilliant. There is no denying the brilliance of the song itself though, and it's the highlight of a very strong album. There is an almost gothic-pop feel to most of the tracks here, and Leigh's voice is rightly placed at the record's centre. It's like a cross between Kate Bush and Chelsea Wolfe in places, and that can't be a bad thing. And there's a picture of an arse on the back cover, so if you love arses you're gonna need this.
