Will Oldham yet again mines his own back catalogue this time as solo singer songwriter armed with just voice and guitar. It will be interesting to hear how everything sits in such an intimate setting. The album has also been made as a companion piece to a book of his lyrics which is about to be published.

And as a plus point you get a nice picture of him with a dog on the cover. Woof woof!

Songs of Love and Horror by Will Oldham

9/10 Richard 14th January 2019

Will Oldham loves a cover album, normally of his own tunes, so if you like me thought "do we really need another set of his tunes reworked by himself?", then rest assured. 'Songs of Love and Horror' is probably his best 'cover' LP yet, and this is a treat for those of you who enjoy that stripped back Bonnie 'Prince' Billy / Palace sound. Just Will and his guitar, and a bunch of great songs, including classics like 'New Partner', 'I See a Darkness' and 'Ohio River Boat Song' amongst others. The final track is an old unreleased track called 'Party With Marty' and is very lo-fi. It's decent, but seems quite out of place compared to the quality production of the rest of the record. A bit of a misstep to include this I'm thinking. Vinyl and cd are nice tip-on sleeves, and the vinyl is pressed beautifully, but there is no download code included (boo!).
