Elastic Days by J Mascis

J Mascis writes a new album, a new album writes J Mascis. Elastic Days is his third solo studio LP away from the daily grind of being in Dinosaur Jr. As with previous albums Several Shades Of Why and Tied To A Star, this one finds The World's Slacker Dad focussing on the acoustic side of life. There’s a bit of a Woods vibe to numbers like ‘See You At The Movies’.

Strange days. This was playing in the office the other day and several people piped up about how lovely it was. I was probably just having a(nother) bad day but it just sounded like EVERY DINOSAUR JR SONG EVER DONE IN ACOUSTIC STYLE INTERRUPTED BY 'CLASSIC' J MASCIS ENDLESS GUITAR SOLOS. And I gave everyone a piece of my mind I can tell you.

The truth is probably somewhere in between the two schools of thought. It is indeed, lovely autumnal and plaintive. Similarly there also won't be many melodies here you haven't heard before in previous J Mascis/Dinosaur Jr records but I guess it doesn't matter too much if you like his songwriting style. Songs like I Went Dust have the kind of regretfulness that you used to hear in Lemonheads songs back when they wrote their own material. It curls around a particularly nice guitar figure and shows that a lot of these old guys still have the chops when they want to.

If you find Dinosaur Jr a bit noisy for your old ears then this is perfect. It's basically an afternoon with Mascis twiddling and singing but it's not all quiet solitude, his drumming appears on several tracks and of course there's those trademark solos wandering around like a rabid dog let off its lead.

My initial reaction was a bit harsh I suppose. Fans will find much to enjoy and if nothing else it will get him funds for his next Volkswagen Golf purchase.
