Matador hosts the debut EP by feels-core radio rock supergroup trio Boygenius, consisting of songwriters Julien Baker (also of Forrister and The Star Killers), Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus. All three musicians hot-swap confessional lead songwriting and vocal duties throughout, lending some varied perspectives and style.

Oh thank God it's just an EP. I'm trawling through a bunch of titles we've not reviewed in the last few weeks in the post Robin reviews lull. This is the sort of record Robin would have known exactly what to say about. It's a collaborative album between Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus who you may know from their solo work and various other projects you may well have heard of.
It's slow and steady alternative radio rock. Opener Bite the Head is slow and sinewy 90s style alt rock with a great guitar break that livens things up somewhat. That's fine -I've no problem at all with that track but Me and My Dog worries me - it sounds like the Dixie Chicks with it's close harmonies and radio-friendly production. It soundtracks one of those moments in my life when I wonder what the hell I'm doing. Sitting here in a darkened room listening to music I don't care for. Luckily, Souvenir comes along to make me feel marginally better about things. Again it's very 90s alt radio - if you like Alanis Morissette or Aimee Mann you are going to like this (neither artist a particular bad thing you know ...but just getting you in the ball park).
It's all a little earnest for me - they are probably sick of the touring life playing to no-one so they are heading for where the bucks are (or where they were in '96) but lord knows what the audience is for this in 2018.
