Estonian violinist and vocalist Maarja Nut joins producer Ruum. Her airy voice and subtle violin create quiet lakes of sound, while Ruum’s electronic soundscapes seem to paint the depths that lie below. Muunduja is a haunting and reflective effort, out on FatCat, one of the finest world-pop/indietronica labels.

I've been spinning this for a while now and I'm still trying to decide if I actually like it. The opening vocal sounds like it would be right at home on the Fonal imprint, a label I do like very much, and I'm reminded immediately of artists like Lau Nau. There seems to be a disconcerting edge to some of the tracks, that knock me slightly sideways. Insistent percussive patterns that create a sense of unease, like a soundtrack to a tense thriller. The closing track 'Une Meeles' saves the day though with a superb 5 minute send off - like a lullaby from the edge of the earth dissolving in front of your ears. So overall I think I do like it. Just.
