Napalm Records (Skindred, Alestorm) release the fourth LP from Ukrainian group Stoned Jesus. If it wasn’t apparent from their name, this band deal primarily in stoner rock and they’re definitely very pleased that Pilgrims’ second track clocks in at exactly 4:20. Stoned Jesus’ sound is not as skull-shaking as genre titans like Sleep. A lot of their music is relatively lean by the conventions of the genre - moments here could pass for Deftones.

Where better to get your stoner jams than Jesus? With pre-ordained riffs and a sludgy pace, this band go straight to the source, wasting no time on non-ecclesiastical psychedelia. It seems a lot of fans are expecting ‘Pilgrims’ to be the very sonorous doom band’s best release to date, and I can certainly see it: these tunes are far more dynamic than they’ve ever been, bringing a multi-faceted edge to a band who exist, let’s face it, in a proudly stagnant genre.
Point of order: “Hands Resist Him” is wise with years, its several parts moving through elegiac prog, hard rock riffology and those ever-serious doom vox you get when you’ve spent weeks listening to nothing but Ozzy. Through the background the band are sweeping textures, using their squelchy electronics to bring some city air into their fantasy. Longer tracks like “Water Me” deal with the problem of their twiddly psychedelic jammin’ by utilising incredibly catchy guitars and elastic rhythmic energy, eschewing the spacey traditions of their scene with hard, bashed-out tunes somewhere within the territory of Kyuss and Melvins. A pretty good territory, all things considered.
The intuited and extremely down-to-earth vibe of Stoned Jesus remains extremely appealing -- few bands can make a dead-faced stoner rock tune last four minutes and twenty seconds and not elicit a collective rolling of the eyes from Norman Records. We have decreed that Stoned Jesus may continue.
