Whoa!!! My internal BPM counter just exploded listening to ‘Poaa’, the debut album from Bamba Pana - real name Jumanne Ramadhani Zegge. This LP is relentlessly fast paced - I was pretty much out of breath after the first short tune, and from there it fully goes off at maximum velocity. This is a youthful electrified/computerized vision of traditional Singeli music and comes from the Sisso studio in the Mburahati ghetto on the outskirts of Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. It’s a style of East African hardcore dance music that pretty much makes Shangaan Electro sound like sloth paced Japanese doom metallers Corrupted. Like holy shit… I feel like I’ve nosebagged a kilo of popping candy and am on some hyper-sugar rush. But hey, I’m not complaining as it’s a real joy to be swept away in the sheer ecstasy and energy of this music. Initially it’s a bit of a shock to the system, but once locked into the grooves its highly infectious. The percussion is so rapid, and has such tight gaps that it almost becomes like an intoxicating, enveloping flickering texture that just totally hypnotizes. If your looking to let off some steam and have a proper blazing workout then this will have you working up a sweat in no time. It’s like it subliminally takes control of the body whether you’re willing or not. I’m pretty into it, but I can totally imagine if it doesn’t grab you that it has the potential to drive a human to the brink of absolute insanity. Totally thrilling music in an edition of just 300 copies on clear wax via the increasingly impressive Nyege Nyege Tapes label.
