Hibernis drop an LP via Serein (Hauschka, Herzog). Middle Of The Meds is a record of ambient electronica that carries itself with a quiet intensity. John Hughes (son of John Hughes, director of Ferris Bueller's Day Off etc.) creates brooding instrumentals reminiscent of Susanna And The Magical Orchestra and the obfuscating synthscapes that characterise Nick Cave and Warren Ellis’ work for screen. The way Lindsay Anderson then embeds her vocals in the mix is reminiscent of Grouper.

It’s easy to lose yourself in the middle of winter. The days are short and the nights are long and cold. Without something to focus on it’s easy to disappear inside the darkness. To prevent this ambient musician John Hughes set out to create a work that had a meditative quality, that he could focus on and relax in to. Turns out he wasn’t the only one who felt that way.
Hibernis is the very warm collaboration between John Hughes an vocalist Lindsay Anderson. What started as a separate project of Hughes’ caught Anderson’s ear which led to her singing along with them as she first listened to them. The result is ‘Middle of the Meds’. Hughes contributions are so clearly contemplative, and as he intended, and stand on their own feet. They’re calm and restrained, crackling like a pleasant fire on a winter’s day. Constructed from the sounds of string and wind instruments, and more electronic ones, they make for a very comforting ambience.
Anderson’s contributions are slightly less grounded, more ethereal. Her improvised vocals are without words. Long and slow melodies that are expertly blended into Hughes’ soundscapes, reminding us that however cosy we may be in the house, the drama and immensity of winter is always waiting outside. She has absolute control of her voice which means she can fit into any of the nooks and crannies left behind by Hughes. Just like the harsh winter wind.
