Sam Beam & co return as Iron & Wine to follow up their Grammy-nominated LP released in early 2018, 'Beast Epic'. Weed Garden is a collection of songs to complement the aforementioned record; its writing has been an evolving process the past three years. The six-song album was a smaller but significant part of the process, all unfinished at the time; includes the fan favourite 'Waves of Galveston'.

Let's not underestimate Sam Beam eh? He had a beard way before anyone else and where other artists tend to shave off their beards from time to time or at least trim them, Beam has maintained the exact same length throughout his career. It's been a long time since his early records such as the always lovely The Creek Drank the Cradle. Beams songwritery is more straightforward these days. More adulty. More.... people sitting at his concerts sort of impressed but never blown away. This low key and short follow up to last years 'Beast Epic' shows traces of his former sound. You can still hear Nick Drake and John Martyn in it's gentle groove-based acoustic sound, his voice is more expressive and less tiny than earlier.
Just when I'm starting to think this is mmmmm...nice but not emotionally affecting comes 'Milkweed' which is utterly beautiful tapping into the same sort of mood as Nick Drake's 'Cello Song' - slow smoky with beautiful baroque string arrangements. Having gone a full circle with his career having expanded his sound to take in a more full on AM radio sound alongside other stylistic shift it turns out that Sam Beam is still rather good at being quiet.
