Despite his recording career running to over half a century at this point (!), Jerry Williams, Jr. shows no signs of taking it easy in his old age. If anything, his latest LP might be his boldest move since abandoning the pop ditties of his Little Jerry years for the gnarled psych-soul sound of Swamp Dogg. Love, Loss and Auto-Tune claims inspiration from Kanye West’s 808s And Heartbreak, but the massed electro-warbles on tunes like ‘I’ll Pretend’ actually have more in common with what Bon Iver was getting up to in the background of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. One wonders if this might be the sort of thing Captain Beefheart would be doing were he still alive today.
