The brilliantly curated Ge-stell label (home to Dalglish/Scald Rougish, NYZ, Tom Knapp, CoH, Sote, Christophe Charles + Kozo Inada and Brandon Nickell) goes from strength to strength...
This Lee Fraser CD has proper caved my head in. He’s clearly taken his time with this album - his previous/debut disc was released on Entr'acte some four years ago. It comes as no surprise that this chap holds a PhD in electro-acoustic composition as Fraser has a masterful approach to computer music; sculpting and manipulating synthetic sound into weird, wonderful shapes and unfathomable geometries. I’m gonna need to invent new adjectives to even begin to attempt to convey what’s coming out of the speakers. It’s like the room has become populated by a load of digital lifeforms that are crawling into my skull and tampering with my brain. Across each of the four pieces, there’s a remarkable tangible quality to the texture of his dazzling, bold sounds - as though the listeners hands could reach out and catch the rubbery sounds and squidge them between the fingers like ectoplasmic goo. Or the brittle crystal sounds that feel so sharp they’d pierce the skin. A fearless exploration into the possibilities of sound that’s thrillingly disorientating and truly mind-melting.
Fans of Hecker, farmersmanuel, Eric Frye etc. ought to jump on board.
