Famous Monsters by Misfits

Misfits had been around for over two decades by the time their fifth LP Famous Monsters came out, but despite their age the east coast crew still knew how to write a slamming tune better than many of their imitators. They display that ability time and again here. Michale Graves, on vocal duties for the second album running following the departure of Glenn Danzig, leads the merry rabble through a full set of campy horror-punk bangers.

It is hard to imagine the Misfits without Danzig fronting everyones favourite horror-punk crew. I, like allot of people, was not enthusiastic about anything post-Earth A.D. so decided to give this release a wide berth for many many years. Oh how wrong I was.

Imagine my dismay when I finally gave the Michel Graves era a whirl and realised how freaking naive I had been. If I’m honest I would prefer to forget about the new stuff with Jerry Only singing because it loses all the appeal entirely and is far too rockabilly in comparison (I have attempted to listen to them but without Danzig or Graves it truly is another monster - no pun intended). In terms of wanting a “classic” Misfits sound the buck really does stop here in 1999.

Do not make the same mistake I did and dismiss it simply due to the lack of Danzig because some of the finest examples of the Misfits catalogue are nestled nicely in Famous Monsters (Scream, Fiend Club, Hunting Humans) and its predecessor American Psycho (eg: Speak of the Devil, Dig Up Her Bones, Crimson Ghost).

To sum up: this album is balls to the wall punk rock perfection. Of course there is nothing but horror references aplenty, metallic guitars and plenty of Woah-oh-oh’s in there but that’s exactly why you are here looking at this magnificent release! Graves did exceptionally well to takeover from Glenn and if you love the Misfits as much as I do I advise you add these outstanding releases to your collection. My only regret? Not listening to this earlier and catching them live with Graves because the guys voice is incredible.
