Uncertainty Principle is off to a flying start, following a cracker from FFT to kick off the label, and now a real smasher in the form of this remarkably strong debut 4-track EP from Berlin-based producer Lårry.

It’s difficult to say how things will fully pan out for this label, but there’s certainly a common aesthetic between the first two releases; these tracks are spawned at the intersection between techno and electro, have gleaming HD production values and follow a lineage of bleeping techno from early Sähkö Recordings through to recent Aleksi Perälä / Colundi. Despite those reference points, ‘sys_001’ has its own character and doesn’t particularly sound like any of the aforementioned.

‘systems_hyperthread’ pulses into action, building tension with solid kicks and sonar blips giving a zoned, searching atmosphere like we’re sat behind some deep sea/space radar screen. The whole thing sorta malfunctions and falls apart, and reassembles a couple of times until things switch gear with gnarly distorted kicks - like we’re in a hyperspace pursuit of an unknown quantity. ‘systems_obfuscate’ goes harder with a heavy, crunching militant stomp, fizzing electronics and hypnotizing bleeps. Just over mid-way, the whole thing gets sucked into a vortex - a move that’ll whip a dancefloor into a frenzy of anticipation before it gets spat back out, then its heads down, lost in the smoke and strobes time.

Over on the flipside, ‘systems_online’ is an eerie ghost in the machine beatless cut - it’s as though some arcane machinery has been discovered and booted up for the first time in aeons by some possessed force. ‘systems_encoder’ is a real gem that oozes the sort of melancholy that’s perfect to drop at the end of the party. It comes like a weeping droid crying tears of oil as it spirals through space, returning to the galaxy from whence it came, whistling the saddest of songs as it bids farewell. All four cuts on here are class - highly recommended.
