The Durutti Column were Tony Wilson’s first signing to Factory Records, and remained an understated constant throughout the label’s existence and beyond. Vini Reilly’s minimal, mostly instrumental arrangements, fluid guitar playing and gentle introversion were an atypical product of post punk, but in retrospect seem to prefigure much in indie and post rock. Over the years Reilly moved from the the drumbox austerity of notoriously sandpaper-sleeved debut The Return of… to incorporate everything from classical elements to soul samples alongside his instantly recognisable playing.
If you only know Reilly from his work on Morrissey’s Viva Hate, or the few occasions his work made an impact beyond cult status, this double retrospective is a fine overview.
