The prodigiously talented Bronx teen MIKE swiftly follows May’s Black Soap tape with a new LP on Lex (Andrew Hung, JJDOOM). Across the thirty-odd minutes of Renaissance Man, the 19 year-old rapper/producer offers up a wealth of hazily soulful beats and eloquently slurred rhymes. The influence of cloud rap is strong here, but there’s also lo-fi hip-hop and a little classic NYC chest-beating. Earl Sweatshirt and King Krule/Archy Marshall both spring to mind.
