The first release on Mirae Arts comes courtesy of Seraphim Ritm, an alias of the artist you may know better as Damaskin. Prayer By The Lake is a four-part suite of glacial techno as cold and crisp as the snow-covered landscape on its cover. The stargazing sounds of Detroit are invoked here, but something about this EP situates it very much on planet Earth. It’s not dissimilar to something you might find coming out on Tresor. Nice work.

It’s techno, Jim but not of the variety you’d expect to hear blasting out of a Funktion One soundsystem on a pumping dance-floor on a Saturday night. No Berghain bangers here then; just gorgeously glacial, deep-frozen, hypnotic rhythms set to ‘Maximum Stun’ mode. Prayers By The Lake is the work of Seraphim Rytm -- perhaps better known in his dark techno guise under the Damaskin trademark.
The record’s four sections continue in a hypno-techno vein at a mid-tempo pace; through part 3 with its mesmeric percussion cyclically overlapping with feather-light cloudy pads; then a surprise ending. The final act in this set of lakeside devotionals brings about a blissful ambient techno conclusion, channeling as it does the likes of Biosphere, Global Communication and Laraaji along the way. Fairly enchanting, I’d say.
