Natural Causes is the new album by Detroit native, ‘60s obsessive, former record store employee and prolific songwriter, Kelley Stoltz. The press release is trying to tell us that this sounds like a cross between The Teardrop Explodes and The Kinks. It’s perfectly plausible given Stoltz ear for a tune. LP & CD on Banana & Louie.

8/10 Clinton Staff review, 18 July 2018

Why doesn't it surprise me that Kelley Stoltz is a record store clerk? His pick and mix approach to power pop and psych pop suggests a man with a vast knowledge of the genres presumably gained through exposure to records no-one has ever heard of. His is a light enjoyable jangle full of yearning and nostalgia. Take 'My Friend' which starts out like a narrow Real Estate demo before coming to a lovely harmonised chorus which consists of the title sung over chords changing underneath. It's lovely but even lovelier is 'Where You Will' which is a glorious summer jangle in thrall to all those lazy hazy post C86 bands that he probably has on mix tapes scattered across his garage.

This record is a bit of a revelation for me as despite seeing his name bandied about and heard the odd track here and there I've never fully investigated. My findings reveal that he's making music specifically designed for me which means lots of jangling plangent guitars, boxy drumming, mid-fi production and eccentric songwriting and arrangements. I don't know about you but it's beginning to sound a lot like the Cleaners From Venus.
