Lovely re-release of a 1979 record by the late Nigerian singer Christy Essien here. The woman they once called ‘The First Lady of Song’ in her native land has been largely overlooked in the Nigerian reissue explosion of the past decade, so it’s about time that something of hers was given a going-over for a new generation. One Understanding is more faithful to American styles than contemporaneous records coming out of Lagos at the time. Disco, funk and Motown soul are peppered with tropes from Hi-Life and Sub-Saharan reggae. Essien’s powerful voice, oddly reminiscent of Bonnie Tyler, brings the thing to life.
