Ryuichi Sakamoto is often unfairly lumped in with ‘composers’ like Luke Howard, Olafur Arnalds and Ludovici Einaudi. He manages to distinguish himself from those charlatans by not being absolutely dreadful. His considered brand of post-minimalist music-making has always seemed well-suited to the big screen, and his score for 2016 Korean flick Ikari (Rage) plays to his strengths. Strings, pianos, lots of reverb, that sort of thing.
