Black Editions reissue a bizarre and mesmerising 1994 album by tireless Japanese improviser Chie Mukai’s group Ché-SHIZU. More melodic and perhaps accessible than the likes of Keiji Haino, the music is nonetheless a riveting, slithering trip through dreamy, not-quite-in-tune arrangements and understated tension. Sluggish and expressive.
