The man once dubbed the Most Beautiful Man In The World...and ...er.. David Sylvian collaborated way back in the mid '80s on these two LPs in Can's home place of Koln in bleak midwinter. At the time record companies weren't bothered about such esoteric collaborations so now is a good time to revisit what the pair were up to. These beatless almost airless ambient albums have now been collected together on a much needed re-issue and remastered for hopefully a more welcoming world.
Staff note from Phil:
These 2 albums are genius. Especially Plight & Premonition which was my sleepy time album of choice for a good 5 years or so. I'm struggling to think of a better ambient album tbh...

A really wonderful collaboration, and a high point in both Sylvian's and Czukay's solo careers.
It's just melancholy, beautiful, abstract, yet it has real form and structure - despite Czukay insisting anytime they got near anything conventional they stopped. You can almost see them pottering late at night in Can's studio producing this with hardly any conscious effort, like all the ideas they've ever had suddenly coalesced. It really is wonderful, earthy and otherwordly at the same time. With Czukay gone and Sylvian retired we know this will sadly never happen again.
I agree with Phil, as far as ambient recordings go, I can't think of any better, ever. Here they simply top the best of Eno. Quite an achievement.

The most handsome man in the world combined with one of the best bass players ever = the best reissue in a decade.
