For his solo exhibition of the same name in a Sligo gallery, Mark Garry invited some chums to write and record music on location, in direct response to the pieces on display. These include Karl Burke, Nina Hynes and Claudia Schwab as well as actor Cillian Murphy and his brother Paidrig Murphy. Sax, strings, guitar, piano and percussion are what accompany the various singers in what is really quite a sweet collection of quiet alt-folk songs.

A Winter Light. In Spring. Well, the clouds haven’t even tried to disperse over Holbeck today so I’ll go along with it… This appears to be folk. It *is* folk in fact, folks, albeit folk with a cool ambience to it that provides the shade and contrast to the warming tones of grounded piano, hovering guitar, weightless sax and shimmering strings which filter the daylight permeating throughout the record. It’s also art, as the record’s subtitle: ‘A Mark Garry Project’ would seem to suggest.
For his solo exhibition at The Model gallery in Sligo, Garry invited a collective of musicians from Ireland and further afield to perform and record new music in direct response to his art works, which he created in the gallery / studio space itself. What we get is a very sweet, highly evocative set of songs composed and performed by what is in essence a loose, temporary collective but often sounds like a band who’ve known each other for many years. Amazingly, it was all put together and laid down onto tape for posterity over the course of four days. Also, it’s extremely beautiful.
