Accomplished techno man Surgeon aka Anthony Child returns with Luminosity Device, a title that sounds like a verbose homage to lightbulbs until you learn it really refers to the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Might be a bit more spiritual, then. These are intense modular techno tunes with excellent sequencing and the sensitive (and sensible) live editing of a disciplined DJ, not a tedious bedroom eurorack jammer. This Surgeon fellow seems to know what he’s doing.

Anthony Child reconciles the properties of his ambient/drone works under his own name and as the Transcendence Orchestra with the tougher elements of his productions as Surgeon, for a psychedelic album inspired by the Bardo Thodol or Tibetan Book of the Dead. Child is hugely influential in the techno sphere and I sorta get the feeling that this album could well usher in a new wave of techno, leading a charge and pulling techno out of the dystopian doldrums in which it currently dwells, and into more utopian, spiritual realms. It’s happening already - lots of track titles are popping up on records referring to spiritual experiences like everyone has been smoking DMT.

‘Luminosity Device’ has all the hallmarks of Child’s productions and it bangs hard so anyone baulking thinking this is gonna be a load of hippy new age stuff can rest assured they’re in safe hands. Transcendence is clearly the key objective - it always has been with techno and there are a few belters here that will gladly assist. ‘Courage To Face Up’ is a real highlight with is snaking, mystical synth line. ‘earth-sinking-into-water’ comes like a maximal Mike Parker. ‘Master Of All Visible Shapes’ slinks and wriggles along magnificently before the ecstatic ‘The Vibratory Waves of External Unity’.

Things feel a bit more refined and focussed than on his rawer previous album, but this one still retains some of that free/live energy that makes the music feel so much more alive than your average techno record that’s chained to the grid. It’s holistic medicine for the dancefloor.
