Oh my goodness, what have I done? Hitting play on this album has been something akin to opening Pandora's box and unleashing a dark force into my home. I think I had better go hide the children under the bed before some bad dudes from the Black Lodge show up… hang on.. They’re already here…. Arghhh!
I jest of course, but this disc is just absolutely immense - one of the most thrillingly intense things I’ve heard in some time and genuinely feels like Australian artist Thembi Soddell has tapped into some intangible force somewhere between inner and outer space. Let’s not focus on her methods of creation because if I think about that stuff too much, it sorta spoils the magic. I could throw every “dark” synonym in my canon at this and it still wouldn't quite capture how relentlessly devoid of light this album is. Listening is like being sealed inside a vacuum, an endless chasm, an abyss being flooded by black tar. It literally feels like glittery black swarms are approaching me, intent on total annihilation. A magnificently terrifying, disturbing work that comes very highly recommended.
Check if you dig Relay For Death, Lustmord, Siavash Amini, Eraserhead etc.
