My three favourite memes are Disaster Girl, UNITINU and Spurdo Spärde. To find out analogue electronics supertrio Wrangler’s (Stephen Mallinder of Cabaret Voltaire, Phil Winter of Tunng and Memetune boss Benge of John Foxx and the Maths) own shortlist, you’ll just have to snap up this EP. Features veteran Crooked Man’s take on ‘Real Life’, Daniel Miller’s oily remix of ‘Theme from Wrangler’ (previously released on remix comp Sparked) and LoneLady’s rework of ‘Space Ace’.

7/10 Daoud Staff review, 05 September 2018

One thing can do but doesn’t do enough is be funny. Comedic music is very strictly pigeonholed and rarely gets to play with the big boys. It’s why I was so grateful for Errorsmith’s Superlative Fatigue. It’s why I love Battles so much. It’s why when I looked inside the darkest reaches of the Norman Records Review Box and I saw a record titled ‘Three Memes’ I thought, here we go. Now for some fun.

So it brings me no pleasure to report that ‘Three Memes’ on MemeTune by Wrangler is not funny in the slightest. Wrangler is a kind of synth supergroup composed of Cabaret Voltaire’s Stephen Mallinder, Tunng’s Phil Winter and Benge’s Benge, and if I’d done any research I’d probably have set me expectations differently. No offence to people who own a lot of synthesizers.

So to the memes in question. And I suppose they are still memes, funny or no, but in the sense that bastard atheist Richard Dawkins first intended. These remixes are “elements of culture” past first to the remixers, and now to us. Of the three Crooked Man’s remix of ‘Real Life’ is the most exciting. It’s amped up arpeggiated lines recall the more propulsive tracks by Emeralds. On the b-side you’ve Mute boss Daniel Mill tackling ‘Theme from Wrangler’, exploiting its core post-punk bassline and amping up the dubby elements. Lastly Lonelady’s remix is of Space Ace, adding vital and filthy guitars.

These memes may not be funny, but they do offer fresh perspectives on Wrangler's previous work and are at the very least, fun.
